Dryathlon - a bloke's diary

Hi,

Welcome to my blog about signing up for Dryathlon, the Cancer Research UK fundraising event for January 2013.

I discovered this by chance, only two days before the New Year, passing a billboard in my old hometown, Livingston.

Now, with Christmas already behind us, and the prospect of more alcohol to be consumed on Hogmanay, the chance to consider a real motivation to go without drink for a set period of time was strong, and one that I have eventually decided to sign up for.

Although I'm not a heavy drinker, I do enjoy a few beers on a night out, and do get drunk. The Christmas period is always a time for buying in a crate of bottled beer for the festive season, just in case!

With the top shelf of the fridge heaving under a couple of dozen chilled bottles of beer, the temptation to lighten its load each night during December is strong. Because most bottles aren't that big (maybe 300ml), I will admit to thinking that a second bottle won't do me any harm.

I'm sure that this may be familiar for most people, although alcohol is a real problem in the UK, and many people suffer as a result of dependency on it.

During January 2013 I hope to write about alcohol in the UK, my experiences of going without it during the month, and a look forward to maybe continuing the dry spell after January.

Feel free to comment after my posts, follow my progress, and you might also want to donate the price of a drink to my Just Giving page.

If you are taking part, good luck - I hope you make it. With my last bottle of Kronenburg finished off at 12:15 this morning, I'm looking forward to giving it a go.

Cheers
Peter
